"ObamaCare" - A Free Man's Nightmare!

National Healthcare. A Socialist, Commie, Dream! A Free Man’s Nightmare!
A Commentary by J. D. Longstreet

***************************************

Editor’s note: Back in July, of 2007, I wrote the following missive. Of course, at the time none of us knew just how deeply into our private lives ObamaCare would eventually reach. Now that we have had a glimpse of the bill, it turns out I was far too conservative in my predictions.

WASHINGTON — In the spring of 2003, long before Abu Ghraib or secret prisons became part of the American vocabulary, a pair of recently hired lawyers at the American Civil Liberties Union noticed a handful of news reports about allegations of abuse of prisoners in American custody.

‘Redemption’ and the Kennedy Clan: Libération, France

Continuing with our global coverage of the reaction to Ted Kennedy’s death, this article by Laurent Joffrin of France’s Liberation frames the saga of the Kennedy clan as one of redemption from a merciless thirst for power.

For Liberation, Laurent Joffrin writes in part:

“In the 1940s and 50s, There wasn’t a clan that was more cynical or more determined in its quest for glory. A brutal father - a liar, very rich and very shady, was marked by hisSource: The Moderate Voice RSS Feed

Glenn Beck: “You Are About to Lose Your Freedom of Speech in This Country”

Glenn Beck has uncovered EXTREMELY disturbing information concerning how the White House through the FCC is now in the stages of developing an alternative to our First Amendment right to free speech under the Constitution. Their schemes are to use an ALREADY IN PLACE apparatus to silence opposition voices under the guise of “diversity” and “localism,” and to charge ASTRONOMICAL amounts of money to use a license.

Help! I've Reached the Obesity Tipping Point, and I Can't Get Up!

Before I tell you about the latest announcement from the the STOP Obesity Alliance, let metake a few sentences to remark on howdumb the name of this organization is. STOP stands for "Strategies to Overcome and Prevent," which adds absolutely nothing to the public's understanding of what the groupis about, serving only as an excuse to put stop in capital letters, which apparently is something the alliance's leadersreally, really wanted to do.Compounding the stupidity, the group's logoreadsSource: Reason Magazine - Hit Run RSS Feed

On the 9/11 National Day of Service issue.

Background here, with commentary here and here - the short version is that the administration is in the process of rebranding 9/11 as a National Day of Service.  Like one of Hot Air’s commenters, I note that 9/12 makes a good deal more thematic sense, but then everything that you really need to know about the actual intent can be seen, as usual, by some of the players involved:

WTC fiasco makes NYC a laughingstock

From WCBS880:
The inscription on the cornerstone for the Freedom Tower reads "To honor and remember those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001 and as a tribute to the enduring spirit of freedom."
Some tribute.
The stone was removed from Ground Zero in 2006 and has been in the yard of the company that cut and polished it since then.
The name of the building it was to be a part of isn't even the same anymore. The Freedom Tower will now be called One World TradeSource: Queens Crap RSS Feed

Peter Singer's Defense of Death Panels

Okay, he doesn't call it that, but, unlike Obama, he is honest enough to call it "rationing."
His argument, as often with Singer, is simple and not very original, but I find his recent article in the NYT is eminently worth reading. It is helping me to identify the real issues involved in the medical care debate.
"Health care is a scarce resource," he says, "and all scarce resources are rationed in one way or another." Free markets determine that some people get the good and some doSource: E pur si muove! RSS Feed

Crapping up the old folks' home?

"The realtor is trying to sell it through false advertising - it was rezoned to R4A in the North Flushing rezoning back in April.
It is a big piece of property, so under R4A they could get in 7 houses on a cul-de-sac or a large community facility. However, that price is outta hand and totally unrealistic." - anonymous

As I looked at Hilary Benn (minister for food or something) holding forth up at Thanet Earth, on the BBC today, I was struck by the similarity of his mannerisms, to that of his father Tony Benn.I had the thought of just how things have changed in the Labour party, when I was growing up, its fair to say that Tony Benn was amongst those consider by many to be a dangerous lefty. Many years later its impossible to see just how the likes of Tony Benn can fit in with current Labour party, thingsSource: British Blogs RSS Feed

SciFi Weekend: Star Trek Sequel; Dollhouse; New Shows; Next Doctor Who Companion in a Bikini

Star Trek writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman deny the predictions made by Zoe Saldana that the script for the next movie is half way done.  They did discuss possibilities for the sequel with SciFi Wire:

Developing a worthy sequel to this year’s generally acclaimed and certainly lucrative Trek reboot will take much more time, Kurtzman said. They have to exhaust every possible idea to find the best ones.

The Danger to the West of Not ‘Helping Russia’: Le Monde, France

Is it incumbent on the West to ‘help’ Russia overcome its past of self destructive behavior and global domination?

According to André Fontaine of France’s Le Monde, if President Obama’s vision of a ’strong, peaceful and prosperous Russia,’ occupying ‘its rightful place as a great power’ were to come to pass without that - we’re all in trouble.

In this warning directed in large part at the United States, Fontaine writes:
